Urinalysis; quantitation of urine protein or albumin is indicated for the diagnosis and monitoring of the nephrotic syndrome and progressive renal disease.

In diabetes mellitus, quantitation of urine albumin to detect slight increases ('microalbuminuria') is indicated for early detection of diabetic nephropathy.
