Viral infection

Specific viral serology is rarely indicated, unless infectious mononucleosis is suspected.

  • Adenovirus

Bacterial infection

Throat swab for culture, if indicated.

  • Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Arcanobacterium haemolyticum
  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae

  • Corynebacterium diphtheriae 

Consult pathologist if diphtheria is suspected, as culture for C. diphtheriae requires special media.

  • Vincent's angina
