Physiological

  • Physical stress/vigerous exercise
  • Emotional stress
  • Pregnancy

Infection, especially 

  • Bacterial
  • Rickettsial
  • Viral (occasionally) e.g. chickenpox, herpes simplex

Microscopy and culture of local lesion, body fluid, or blood, as appropriate.

Other inflammation, especially

Drug therapy, especially

  • Corticosteroids
  • Cytokines

 


Cytokines (eg, G-CSF, GM-CSF) commonly cause neutrophilia and/or monocytosis.

  • Lithium
