Anaemia is often multifactorial; causes may include reduced erythropoietin, haemolysis, blood loss and nutritional deficiencies.

FBC, blood film. Ferritin, iron/transferrin saturation capacity and erythropoietin, prior to erythropoietin therapy.

Haemoglobin and reticulocyte count to monitor erythropoietin therapy.
