Item Process
Specimen

2-5 mL blood in plain tube.

Method

Immunoassay.

Reference Interval

Method dependent; titre typically <16.

Application

Diagnosis of Toxocara canis or Toxocara cati infection causing visceral larva migrans or ocular larva migrans (usually in children).

Interpretation

A single positive result is not proof of active infection.

A rising or falling titre may be diagnostic in the appropriate clinical setting.

A negative result does not exclude the diagnosis.
