| Method | Fixed tissue in 10% buffered formal saline. |
| Application | Investigation of abnormal smears. Diagnosis of HPV and other cervical infections. Assessment of epithelial hyperplasia and metaplasia, grading of epithelial dysplasia (CIN), diagnosis of invasive malignancy. |
| Interpretation | Report by pathologist identifies the nature of the lesion sampled. Tumour type, grade and stage are reported for neoplasms. |
