Random or 24 hour urine collection.

Method

Spectrophotometry.

Reference Interval

Random collection:
Infant <6 months: <1.5 mol/mol creatinine
Adult (female, male): 0.6 mol/mol creatinine

24 hour collection:
Adult female:1.6-5.6 mmol/24 hours
Adult male: 2.2-6.6 mmol/24 hours

Application

Gout, renal calculous disease, suspected Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

Interpretation

Patients with a high urate excretion have an increased risk of forming uric acid renal calculi.
