Method

Immunoassay (EIA). Myelin Basic Protein.

Application

No proven clinical utility, largely superseded by antibodies to myelin glycolipids of uncertain role in diagnosis/follow up of multiple sclerosis.

Application of possible role identification of neuropathies in IgM monoclonal gammopathy.

Interpretation

The frequency of myelin antibodies in patients with peripheral neuropathy is essentially identical to that found in normal individuals.
