| Specimen | 2 hour timed urine collection after an overnight fast. The patient should not consume meat or gelatine-containing products (eg, ice cream) for the 24 hours prior to the collection. |
| Method | Spectrophotometry. Results are expressed as a ratio to creatinine. |
| Reference Interval | Dependent on age and lean body mass. Adult: <35 mmol/mol creatinine. |
| Application | Assessment of bone resorption eg, in the monitoring of Paget’s disease and osteoporosis. Has largely been replaced by other markers of bone turnover. |
| Interpretation | Hydroxyproline output indicates the level of active bone turnover and associated collagen catabolism. |
