| Item | Process |
|---|---|
| Specimen | 4.5 mL blood in 0.5 mL citrate. |
| Method | Tests based on thrombin clotting time are in common use. Also, heat precipitation and immunoassay |
| Reference Interval | 1.5-4.0 g/L. Some variation with method. |
| Application | Investigation of possible acquired or inherited bleeding disorder. |
| Interpretation | Low levels indicate reduced production (liver disease, inherited deficiency) or increased consumption (DIC, fibrinolysis). Levels are elevated in an acute phase response. A discrepancy between functional and immunological methods is found in the presence of FDP, and in dysfibrinogenaemia. |
